Pushrod Adjustment

Solid Lifters - Either by rotating the kicker or with the transmission in high gear and rotating the elevated rear wheel, roll the engine over by hand (removing spark plugs will make this easier) until the tappet roller is on the "heel" or base circle of the cam (lowest point of lifter travel), extend the pushrod or lifter adjuster (whichever the case may be) until all slack or up and down movement is eliminated but you should still be able to freely spin the pushrod with your fingers. Repeat this procedure for each pushrod/lifter. Always roll the engine over again and recheck your adjustments. Always adjust the lifters when the engine is cold.

Hydraulic lifters - Either by rotating the kicker or with the transmission in high gear and rotating the elevated rear wheel, roll the engine over by hand (removing spark plugs will make this easier) until the tappet roller is on the "heel" or base circle of the cam (lowest point of lifter travel), extend the pushrod until all slack or up and down movement is eliminated, continue turning the adjuster as per the proper specifications for your pushrods (You might find the tables below helpful).
Allow 5-15 minutes for the lifter to bleed down before you move on to the next lifter.
DO NOT turn the motor over at all until you are able to freely spin the pushrod with your fingers.
It is always a good idea to roll the motor over by hand a couple of times after the last lifter has bled down, if something isn't right and things that aren't supposed to touch suddenly decide they want to now, you'll do a lot less damage by hand than what will happen when you press that starter button.
